Morice Gate, Morice Yard
There are two external gates providing access to Morice Yard: the North Gate, at
the bottom of New Passage Hill and Morice Gate, this one, in Queen Street.
This is a Google image (2009) of Morice Gates viewed from Ordnance Street.
Morice Gate, plus the two Gatehouses and the attached dockyard walls are all listed
by English Heritage as Grade II*. These buildings/gates were constructed nearly
300 years ago, circa 1720-1724 (the red brick buildings at right were built during the 1990s)
Compared with another military gate in Devonport, the
Raglan Gatehouse, Morice Gate is quite plain. This close-up view shows the
original wrought-ironwork and lamp, and one of the small guns that were placed atop
each pier in recent years (believed by author to have been placed there sometime
between 1965-1990 - but if you know differently I'd be pleased to hear from you)
