Information on travelling to Devonport...
From Plymouth City Airport
Why, you might ask, is there a section on arriving by air - such as a tourist might?
This is Devonport, a local neighbourhood - surely there are no tourists here? Yes, there are. We do have tourists. I have received, at
least twice every summer for the last five years, emails from family-history researchers
who want to explore Stoke Damerel. Stoke Damerel being an early name for Devonport
(read more in the
history
pages). All of our visitors in this category arrived from Australia, excited to
see the place where their ancestors were born. I thoroughly enjoyed walking around
with them, helping to create an image of Devonport during the 19th century.
Granted, two a year is not many, but given the current regeneration of this neighbourhood
it's feasible to be optimistic. We have three centuries of history to offer, we
have plenty of waterfront, a marina, stunning views, a county cricket ground, and
much more. Plus we are growing, Devonport is improving daily. Soon there will be
proper hotels for visitors. Soon, if the council's planning goals come to fruition,
our waterfront areas will be alive with cafes & restaurants and buzzing with life.
And if perchance large industries begin to move into South Yard in the future, then
given all of the above, Devonport could well expect increased overseas visitors
who wish to fly to this part of the world. And for those that do, arriving at Plymouth
city airport, this is the driving route to Devonport....

By Water
- Arriving from Cornwall? Following the A374 in Cornwall will bring you to Torpoint,
a small town on the river Tamar. There is a popular vehicle & foot ferry that crosses
between Devonport and Torpoint regularly, every 15 minutes or so. If you take the Ferry
by foot, on reaching the Devonport side there is a taxi rank and a bus service available. (see Bus info above)
Don't forget to check-out the Royal Navy ships on the river as you cross. You'll be able
to see a lot of the dockyard and the naval base from the ferry - all very attractive.
- Arriving from France or Spain? If you intend to arrive in this city via a Channel
Ferry, then you will arrive at Millbay Dock. It's possible to walk to Devonport from
Millbay, but since you'll probably have luggage a taxi is quickest, it's only a
5 or 6 minute journey. There is no direct public bus from the Ferry at Millbay,
not to Devonport, it's too awkward; a taxi is best and they are easily available
from the Ferry port.
